| Key Stage 3 SATs Analysis Suite v 1.0 | Populate with Year 9 pupil data from SIMS or similar, add Maths Sets and SATs Entry Tiers, then enter pupil raw scores from SATs. Package calculates pupil NC level & sublevel, gives analysis of year group (e.g. % L5+ or %L6+), allows instant viewing of pupils in a given set of criteria via filters (e.g. all those in either Set 2 who achieved a 7) and enables easy investigation by gender, ethnicity, teacher assessment, KS2 baseline, maths set, free school meals etc via pivot tables. As my own Head responded, "So what percentage of left-handed Sri Lankan girls achieved a Level 6b?" | Excel workbook |
| Key Stage 3 SATs Analysis Guide | Documentation for above with screen shots. Prepared for Redbridge Leading Maths Teachers meeting, June 2006. | Word document |
| Optional Test Analysis Yr 7 Levels 4-6 (2008) UPDATED!! | Enter pupil names on first tab, then enter marks by question (as 1 or 0) for each paper. Last tab summarises all data in a colour-coded class table (Gold = strength, Blue = on target, Grey = area for development / target). Teacher can view class trends as well as individual performance. Mark is converted to sub-level for each child for easy comparison with KS2 data. Whole page can be printed off for parents' evening, report writing, next year's teacher etc. Another use might be a mail merge for individual pupils to stick their Maths targets into their school planners. Each question is coded according to the Framework objective it assesses, so these can simply be edited if a different assessment is being used. |

Course Component Calculators |
Using this tool, students can see the effect of all the various components (strands in each piece of coursework plus scores in both papers) as they count towards the overall mark. By moving the sliders, the student can set personal targets for each part in order to aim for the desired overall grade. | 3 Excel Workbooks: |

| Twenty Questions | Teacher enters a word or number which the pupils have to guess using no more than 20 yes/no questions. Word/number can be entered while pupils watch the screen since it remains hidden while being typed. Pupils ask the questions and the program magically appears to give the appropriate response (Yes/No) whenever the teacher clicks on the button. How does it know? "It can hear you!" Point system based on questions asked and guesses made. Program keeps track of number of questions asked and current high score. |

| Su Doku Solver | Enter the 9x9 Su Doku from the paper and use the buttons to guide you to the solution. The program can be used either to tell you which number to enter next or to solve the puzzle completely. Features Reset button and four memories for solving extra-hard Su Doku. | Excel Workbook

| Baked Bean Sim | You are in charge of quality assurance at the baked bean factory. During one shift you have to try to get ten successive batches out within the specified tolerance, even though the machine has a built-in random drift from the desired mean. Reset the machine to start again. As the QA inspector you then have to judge the right settings for mean (fill volume) and s.d. (production speed) in order to minimise the percentage rejected without sacrificing output/profit. Used to illustrate Quality Assurance as part of GCSE Statistics. Introduces Normal Distribution function in Excel to generate realistic Normal samples. |

| Quadratics and Factors | A simple illustration of macros and buttons. As it stands, two linear expressions are multiplied to give a quadratic. Endless generation of new examples. Either the quadratic or the two factors can be hidden for pupils to guess. Reveal button allows checking. Once you see how easily this is all done you will want to create your own similar hide/reveal/generate projects. | Excel Worksheet

| Magic Total | Spreadsheet generates and prints pages and pages of different 4x4 squares, a unique one for each child in the class. Try as they might, each child's four-number total is always 76, as you predicted. This trick is documented in the book above under "Total Disbelief". The magic total can be altered by simple tweaking of the code within. | Excel Worksheet

| Yummy Flakes | Used to illustrate Simulation in GCSE Statistics. Inside every promotional packet of Yummy Flakes Cereal is a plastic Yummy Bear. There are six differently coloured Yummy Bears to collect, but the colours are not equally likely. How many boxes of Yummy Flakes does Mummy have to buy? Spreadsheet runs the simulation with the click of a button and displays the number of trials needed each time. Probabilities associated with each colour can be edited and the effect noted. *Improved version uses VBA to run 50 simulations automatically and to record the results as it goes. Displays increasing number of trials and cumulative mean. |

| BMI Calculator | Developed for the use of the school staff "Target 25" Club. Simple interface to help the user work in either Imperial or Metric to find both their BMI and their ideal weight. (Healthy adult BMI is 20-25; >25 is Overweight; >30 is Obese) | Excel Worksheet |
| Dice & Spinners | Excel VBA Dice & Spinner Simulations. Either use as an example of simulating dice rolls, or as a simple guide to Excel VBA Programming. Fully-commented code makes it easy to follow and adapt. To access the code go to Tools - Macro - Visual Basic Editor then double click on one of the Sheets in the Project window. | Excel Worksheet contains VBA macros |
| Arithmetic Machine | Excel spreadsheet used as a training exercise in macros, sliders, spinners and buttons. Your choose the two numbers, then ask the machine to add / subtract / multiply / divide them. Quite fun! | Excel Worksheet
